Spizella breweri
2
July 26 Little Washoe Lake, 5020 ft., Washoe Co., Nev. - 2 seen
in tall sagebrush (nearly pure stand) bordering
alkaline flat by the now receded lake.
Aug. 6 N. of Washoe Lake, 5000' ft., Washoe Co., Nev. - 4
seen on an early p.m. visit of a few minutes
in a 1/2 hr. drive thru sagebrush- antelope
brush & desert peach on flat desert.
Aug. 17 Little Truckee R. valley, 3 mi. E, 5 1/2 mi. N Robert Mills,
Nevada Co., Calif. - about 10 found in grassy
valley (< 1/4 mi. across) with numerous tall,
browsed willow thickets along winding
streams. The sparrows flew up from
the grass, giving only slight "toop" call
notes, & took refuge in lower branches
of the willows. There is abundant
low (browsed) sagebrush on higher land
nearby; but the Brewer's Sparrow seems
to have moved into the moist swales.
Aug. 21 Dresher Cr. valley, 1 1/2 mi. E, 3 1/2 mi. N Truckee, Nevada
Co., Calif. - about 30 found in similar, but
less extensive grassland with willow thickets.
Aug. 23 Little Washoe L., 5020 ft., Washoe Co., Nev. - 3 seen
by Dorothy Broner (who is an experienced amateur,
familiar with this sp.) in same sagebrush area
where I saw the ones of July 26. [not singing].
