Cogswell 1950 Spizella passerina 3 OBSERVATIONS ON BEHAVIOR OF FLEDGLING AND ACCOMPANYING ADULT, AFTER FORMER WAS BANDED. Aug. 16 near Sugar Bowl Lodge, 6900 ft., 1.2 mi. SSW Donner Pass, Glacier Co. Calif.- A short-tailed fledgling, with yellow gape still showing at side when bill was closed, was caught by hand near a dense alder thicket and scattered 1 to 6 ft. high lodgepole pines. There are 2 clumps of 20 to 50 ft. high pines and firs just upslope from the alders & above up a steep bank from the flat where young was obtained. Fledgling was banded (# 47-81439) on the right leg & released about 10:35. Adults (2+) were scolding from bushes & trees nearby during the operation. Then Mrs. Marjorie Chilton & Dr. Cogswell went 50 ft. away upslope near pine clumps to observe. (Times are P.D.S.T.) 10:38 - adult foraging about 40 ft. from young, on gravelly ground at edge of willow thicket & short lodgepole pines. 10:39 - adult ceased foraging, and flew 50 ft. south to firs beyond our station. 10:41 - young is hopping 5 ft. away from short pines, giving food call 2 x /second. a garter snake is swimming in 8 ft. wide pool a few feet from young bird. 10:42 - adult now foraging on ground near bed of minerals. 10:42 1/2 - adult flew across pool to 5 ft. from young. 10:43 3/4 - young hopped close to adult, down to edge of pool. Adult flew to cottonwood across base of pool from young, which hopped to alders where
