chipping Sparrows were found to sing from
low rocks or logs on the ground while the
light was still so dim that the bird could be
barely made out from 30 ft. away. There are
clumps of fir trees within 100 ft. of the spot
where I was singing thus from the ground.

small & large meadows, at latter place in
dense growth of incense Cedars.

July 25 S. slope "Signal Hill", 7100-7200 ft., 34 mi. W Donner Pass, Place,
& Nevada Co., CaliF - 12-15 encountered, including
several fledglings, in tall, dense chaparral (!)

berry oak., having apparently moved into this
habitat from nesting sites in forest clumps
adjacent to open herb slopes nearby.
Aug 1-15 - Lake Van Norden & Sugar Bowl Lakes W & SW Donner Pass,
Glacier Co. CaliF - increased in numbers notably,
specially in open, grass & weed-floored
forest of lodgepole pine near the lake shore.
