Cogswell 1950 Spinella passerina June 17 near Sugar Bowl Lodge, 7000 ft., 1.2 mi. SSW Donner Pass, + N. shore L. Van Norden, 6800 ft. Placer Co., Calif - fairly common about the edges of the cleared ski slopes, utilizing the remaining fir clumps as singing perches -- and (near the lake) common throt open lodgepole pine forest where a good, but low growth of herbs occurs underneath. early Singing more persistently than in June. Common July - near Ice Lakes in similar habitat to that at Norden. July 5 Cisco Grove, 5650 ft., on S. fork Yuba R., Placer Co., Calif. 2 singing in black cottonwood trees over sandy flat along river. One seen gathering rootlets from exposed cottonwood roots on the flat. It tugged vigorously at one small brown rootlet after another, leaning far backward with tail on the ground, so finally flew off into denser woodland across the stream with several in the bill. July 7 N. side Bear Valley, 4580 ft., Nevada Co., Calif - about 15 found on 1 1/2 hr. visit to Transition zone forest with many large black oaks and large grassy meadow adjacent to it. Several singing. July 13 Donner Pass to 1/2 mi. N of it, 7200 ft., Nevada Co., Calif - about 20 seen, including at least 2 family groups of begging fledglings. Several singing (mid p.m.). The habitat is sparse argatechy Jeffrey pine, lodge. pole pine - juniper forest (occasional firs) with about 1/2 of interloving ground chaparral covered.
