Cogswell 1950 Junco oreganus 3 early July - near Sugar Bowl Lodge, 7000 ft. [see p.] - numerous in pairs, all singing frequently throughout the day. July 5 flushed from nest which is placed on a ceiling plank of an elevated porch of the Disney cabin fully 7 ft. from the ground! The entrance is via an 8 inch wide space where one of the planks is missing. The ♀ performed a very nice diversionary display on the ground below o near to porch, with his wings & tail spread widely. July 7 Bear Valley, 4585 ft., Nevada Co., Calif. - fairly common, 1 fledgling seen in dry conifer forest & oak border. July 13 Donner Pass to ½ mi. N of it, 7500 ft., Nevada Co., Calif. (p.m.) numerous — many fledglings in loose flocks with adults juncos — and all admixed with Chipping Sparrows. There are definitely more young out here (S-facing slope) than near to lodge, (N facing) July 20 near Sugar Bowl Lodge, 7000 ft. [see p.] - a new nest located by base of small lerpine in open herb- covered slope some 200 x 300 ft. wide between willow thickets of wet meadow (closest “cover”) and border of conifer forest. It holds 4 eggs, the ♀ incubating; the ♂ scolding us nearby. July 22 Cisco Grove, 5650 ft., on S. Fork Yuba R., Placer Co., Calif. Several in riparian woodland which includes many tall black cottonwoods. 2 were singing. July 23 Tree Peak trail from High Meadow — 10,500 ft., Oldorado, Calif. about 50, at timberline - foraging in “Krummholz” whitebark near+ (including junerals) pines. also scattered lower alt.
