Cogswell 1950 Pipilo maculatus July 11 6300 ft., 3 mi. S L. Van Norden Glacier Co., Calif. - 1 singing from top of 30 ft. high black oak on chaparral-covered slope with scattered pines & firs nearby. This S-facing ridge between Serena & Onion Cr. canyons has extensive areas of this nature, & would be expected to attract any up-mountain wanderers -- or perhaps even straggling breeders. Green-tailed Towhees are also common in these same chaparral areas. [only record this summer W of Sierra crest]. July 26 Little Washoe Lake 5020 ft., Washoe Co., Nev. - 1 heard singing in cottonwood trees (small grove of large trees) just SW of lake. Extensive sagebrush areas nearby. Aug. 5 Verdi, 4850 ft., Washoe Co., Nev. - 1 heard singing from tall cottonwoods along Truckee River, near a 50 ft. wide strip of tall shrubs on the old stream bank, now at about 1/2 tree height level. Aug. 6 5050 ft. E. side Washoe Valley, 1 1/2 mi. N Washoe L., Washoe Co., Nev. - 1 calling (a noticeably different "wreee" from that of Pacific slope birds) from tall sagebrush in an area which was nearly pure A. tailoatata with some desert peach. We flushed the bird 3 times; it always took refuge by flying low over & ducking down between the bushes, along Mt. Rose Road. Aug. 23- 5100-6000 ft., alluvial fan E Carson Range, Washoe Co., Nev. - 2 seen by Dorothy Gruner -- in area of tall sagebrush & antelope brush [I saw them here several times in summer of 1948]
