Cogswell 1950 Chlorura chlorura 2 July 9 - Lake Valley, 6300-6500 ft., S. of Lake Tahoe - about 5 seen in open Jeffrey pine forest with sagbrush and/or scattered manzanita - Canothus understory. There being seen as we drove, the species seems commoner here than near Donner Pass. July 10 E. side Boca Res., 5600 ft., Nevada Co., Calif. - 3 singing birds found in 1 1/2 hr. visit to open sagebrush flats. July 11 (clown) 6800-6300 ft., 2 1/2-3 1/2 mi. S Lake Van Norden, Placer Co., Calif. 5+ singing on 3 stops in montane chaparral -> chaparral-forest edge areas along am. Divis Cr road. July 19, 20, 25 July 13 "Disney Mtn" [see p. 1] - 1 singing in same area as on June 21. "" (p.m.) - Donner Pass to 1/4 mi. N of it, 7200 ft., Nevada Co., Calif. 3 heard singing, +1 seen, in this seemingly optimum habitat for them (dry, scattered shrub patches -> sparse forest areas). July 21 Emigrant Gap, 5100 ft., Placer Co., Calif. - 1 singing on steep N facing, chaparral-covered slope. July 22 Cisco Grove, 5700 ft., on S Fork Yuba R., Placer Co., Calif. 2 heard singing in mixed chaparral (some cherry included) among sparse pines, firs, or cedars on rocky slope. July 24 Flat E Boca Reservoir, 5600ft, Nevada Co., Calif. - 1 short- tailed fledgling found hiding among bases of sage- brush & grasses. No adults located today, = no songs [cf. similarly tuned visits on July 10+ before]. July 27 S slope "Signal Hill" [see p. 1] - 4 adults (1 singing) and 2 fledglings seen the latter being fed by 1 adult staded under the base of white firs adjacent to chaparral -covered slope.
