Spizella psaltria
June 17 S.E. side Bear Valley, 4600 ft., Placer Co., Calif. - 1♂ singing from wires & shrubs near a few large black oaks
& maples by rock outcrop at edge of grassy meadow.
June 23 N. side Bear Valley, 4585 ft., Nevada Co., Calif. - 2♀♀ in
black oaks & few locusts by edge of conifer forest.
July 7 Emigrant Gap, 5200 ft., just S of above locales - 1 flew
over manzanita & ceanothus, slope with scattered
small black oaks & young pines & cedars.
July 20 near Sugar Bowl Lodge, 7000 ft., 1.2 mi. SSW Donner Pass,
Placer Co., Calif. - Definite plaintive calls of this
species heard at edge of clump of tall, dense firs by cleared ski slopes; but the bird flew away
calling as it went before I maneuvered to see it.
This is the highest altitude at which I have
ever found the species in the Donner Pass
region; it must be an up mountain wanderer.
July 21 N. side Bear Valley [see above] - 1 pair in same oaks as
on June 23.
July 22 Cisco Grove, 5650 ft. on S. Fork Yuba R., Placer Co., Calif.
1 pair seen on wires over low herb. covered ground
and in nearby willow thickets bordering riparian
woodland and open conifer forest.
July 23 Kings Beach, 6250 ft., N. end L Tahoe, Placer Co., Calif. - 1♂
flew up from weedy roadside by golf course.
July 26 near Verdi, 4800 ft., Washoe, Nev. - 2 perching on & flying
from chicory plants along highway.
Aug. 1 near Norden RR Sta., 6800 ft., Placer Co., Calif. - 1 flown to wires near which 5 birds were feeding & calling (from
willows & on ground).
