Cogswell 1950 Spinus pinus 2 July 20. near Sugar Bowl Lodge, 7000 ft., 1.2 mi. SSW Donner Pass, Placer Co., Calif. - 20 est., 15 of them in a loose flock in dense forest near Solitaire nest. Some of these were foraging out the outer tips of the lateral branches of the red firs, nibbling at the young, light green needles (some of which fell to ground) and apparently eating them. July 21 N. side Bear Valley, 4885 ft., Nevada Co., Calif - 5+ in white fir, yellow pine, incense cedar forest near meadow. July 22 Cisco Groove, 5650 ft., on S fork Yuba R., Placer Co., Calif. Several in a flying over tall black cottonwoods along slow part of stream - with conifers on either side. July 23 Freel Peak trail, 7800 to 10,900 ft. from High Meadow, Carson Range, Eldorado Co., Calif - about 20 found in 2 miles of trail thru red fir lodgepole pine silver pine forest with alders & aspens along streams; 12 counted in 2 miles of subalpine forest of whitedark pine & mountain hemlock; 2 flew over barren slopes above timberline near peak. late early Aug.} near Sugar Bowl Lodge [see above] - recorded almost daily in small numbers but no songs heard most regular one seen by detached fir clump near alders & stream. Saw regularly also on S. slope of Signal Hill just W Donner Pass. Maximum of 5 per 2 hr. field trip. mid Aug. - Even less numerous; only 1 or 2 birds at any one foot. Aug. 24 S. slope "Signal Hill", 7100 ft., 3/4 mi. W Donner Pass, Placer Co., Calif. Group of 3 feeding on weed stalks under clump of white firs. (seeds?) Aug. 25 1/3 to 1/2 mi. S Donner Pass, 7100 ft., Placer Co., Calif - 3 seen. Aug. 26 near Sugar Bowl Lodge [see above] - several seen.
