June 17 near Sugar Bowl Lodge, 7000 ft., 1.2 mi. SSW Donner Pass,
off.
Placer Co. Calif. - frequent, in 2's to 5's, in forest
a forest border habitats throughout the red fir
- lodgepole & silver pine belt of Pass area.
June 24 - no full songs were heard during these first few
days, however.
June 24 W. end Donner Lake, 5930 ft., Nevada Co. Calif. - group of
6 watched for some time as they fed on green,
sandy
dandelion (Taraxacum?) seeds on flat under
edge of lodgepole pine forest by the inlet to
the lake. They ~~ pecked in among the
involuteral bracts, scattering a few seeds with
unopened
pappus as they did so; o selecting one seed
after another, they nibbled it while holding it
up in the bill ~~ until the pappus dropped
off, whereupon the seed was swallowed.
Several of the group showed no yellow
in the wing & tail & ~~ were slightly
buffy, general background color (= jinerals?)
July 3 near Sugar Bowl Lodge [see above] - still encountered
in 2's & 3's. A few are now singing from
tops of firs fronting on open slopes by the lodge.
July 7 Emigrant Gap, 5200 ft., Placer Co. Calif. - 2 flew over
chaparral, black oaks, & scattered conifers on N-facing slope
July 9 Lake Valley 6230 to 6500 ft., S. end Lake Tahoe, Eldorado,
Calif. - several seen in open pine - fir forested areas.
mid-July various locales W & W, 155W Donner Pass, - more regularly
encountered than 2 wks. ago. flock of 10+ on July 18,
