Cognacell 1950 Carpodacus cassinii 4 late august various locations W, SW and SSW Donner Pass, 7150-6750 ft. Nevada Placer Cos., Calif - became very common along L. Van Norden, near Ice Lakes, and on open slope (cleared) by Sugar Bowl Lodge. Over 100 were seen in 1 hr. at Ice Lakes on 24th, and large numbers fly up from road along L. Van Norden. A few adult males were found, but the vast majority are in the dull plumage. Several examples intermediate plumaged male, with the breast and rump a decided [illegible] but pale orange and the top of the head dull red, was seen on Signal Hill near Sugar Bowl Lodge. Whether this is a 1st year male molting into ad. plumage is doubtful, since the orange cast seems to be all over the breast - not due to mixture of red and other colors. No songs heard at all now. According to Geo. Salt, who visited us on Aug. 22-23, these high altitude concentrations disappear sometime in Sep., and members begin to show up in the white Jeffrey pine forest on the E slope of the Sierra (as near Boca). The shift in numbers, he says, apparently occurs abruptly; but exact dates are lacking. Aug. 23 8800 ft. 2 1/2 mi. SSE Mt. Rose [see June 27] - about 5 (all dull plumaged) in small quiet group feeding on lower branches of pines and hemlocks on adjacent ground sparsely dotted with herbs. One allowed approach by me to within 8 feet.
