Carpodacus cassinii Cogswell 1950 July 7 N. side Bear Valley, 4980 ft., Nevada Co., Calif - I heard singing (a glimpsed = ad. ♀) from few conifers about a rock outcrop in open grassy meadow. 1♀-plumaged individual also seen at close range. All 3 species of Carpodacus found here today!! this being the lowest altitude W of Sierra crest I have ever found this sp. in summer. July 9 Lake Valley, 6250-6500 ft., S Lake Tahoe, Eldorado Co., Calif Common in open conifer forest, both where understory is manzanita, etc., and in drier sagebrush areas. July 11 Soda Springs, 6750 ft., Nevada Co., S. of [illegible] ft., on S-facing slope on River Canyon, Placer Co., Calif - about 10 heard or seen on 1 hr. visit at dawn, including 3 stops in Canadian or canadian-transition ecotone. Strangely none were in song! mid-July near Sugar Bowl Lodge + other areas just W Donner Pass [see p. 1] - singing seems to have decreased in frequency, the species is still found only in pairs or small groups. July 23 High Meadow, 7800 ft., to upper edge fir belt W Star Lake, 9000 ft., Carson Range, Eldorado Co., Calif - About 10 encountered in 2+ miles of trail thru sphagnum with frequent patches of low chaparral + (along streams) Aspen and/or willows. -from W Star Lake, 9000 ft (lake at 9210 ft.) to timberline on Fred Peak, 10,400 ft., Carson Range, Eldorado Co., Calif - about 30 in 2 miles of trail thru Hudsonian zone forest (lodgepole pine; whitebark pine - mtn. hemlock type);
