Cogswell 1950 Carpodacus purpureus June 17 5150 ft, 1/2 mi. S Lake Saunding, Nevada Co., Calif. - 1 heard singing from patchy dense forest containing black oaks, with much chaparral nearby. June 23 N. side Bear Valley, 4985 ft., Nevada Co., Calif. - 6 found on 1st visit to forest bordering wide grassy meadow. Several were singing (1 in dull plumage), mostly in or near the large black oaks at forest edge or scattered over closer parts of meadow. June 29 7100 ft, just E Mary L., 1/2 mi. SSW Donner Pass, Placer Co., Calif. 1♂ (full color) singing from lodgepole pines over small willow thicket area. This is most likely an up- mountain migrant, altho quite early. Nearest known probable breeding area is at Cisco, 3650 ft., about 11 mi. W., or in Am. River canyon a shorter distance (but over a high ridge) to the SSW. June 30 Big Bend Camp Rd., 5850 ft; on S. fork Yuba R., Placer Co., Calif. At least 3 (1 singing) in tall, dense forest of white fir, Jeffrey, lodgepole pines, with small glade of mountain alder, + other lesser shrubs nearby. July 7 N. side Bear Valley. [see above] - 3 singing ♂♂ July 11 6500 ft., 3 mi. S L. Van Norden, Placer Co., Calif. - 1 singing (early am) from forest bordering dense chaparral area with few young black oaks. July 17 near Sugar Bowl Lodge, 7000 ft; 1.2 mi. SSW Donner Pass, Placer Co., Calif. - First ones (3+) noted in forest + wet meadow with willow thickets, where they were common in 1948 mixed with C. cassini. One singing today. July 19,20 - 4 + 2 singing, + several others seen, in same area.
