Hesperiphona vespertina

July 8 S slope "Signal Hill" [see June 21] - 2 seen
July 9 Lake Valley, S. of Lake Tahoe , 6300+ ft. {small groups
- Martes Peak ridge, N. of Lake Tahoe, 700 ft.} seen in conifers
forest areas.
July 11 Soda Springs, 6750 ft., [illegible] 4 mi. S to S-facing slope of
N. Fork Am. River Canyon, 6300 ft., Placer Co., Calif. - about
10 heard, several of them seen, on 4 stops in
forest (Canadian + Transition zones) and forest bordering
chaparral areas. The one nest we discovered
in 1948 was at 6800 ft. alt. in this area; but the
Jeffrey pine in which it was situated has since
been taken for lumber, together with many of
its red + white firs surrounding it.
July 13 near Sugar Bowl Lodge [see July 6] - 2 seen in red fir -
+ white pine
lodgepole pine forest bordering cleared ski slopes.
2400 ft.
E. side Mary Lake, 1 3 mi SSW Donner Pass, Placer Co., Calif
3+ in similar forest:
July 22 Cisco Grove, 5650 ft., on S. Fork Yuba R., Placer Co., Calif
1 ?? on ground under cottonwoods again [cf. July 5].
July 24 near Sugar Bowl Lodge [see above] - 4 & 2 noted on
July 25 these dates, their occurrence becoming more frequent.
July 25 S slope "Signal Hill" [see above] - About 10 seen or heard
on 1 1/2 hr. visit. They are noticeably more common
in certain areas - here in sparse forest + chaparral
and in denser forest of Am. River C. & Martes Ridge
- but I am at a loss to describe the habitat
more precisely.
July 27 about 20 seen in 1 flock here today, including
at least several definite juvenals (lots of down on head).
