Cogswell 1950 Hesperiphona vespertina June 21 S slope "Signal Hill", 7100 ft, 3/4 mi W Donner Pass, Placer + Nevada Co., Calif. - 1 flock of 3, and 1 pair seen in area of dense brush patches (soft and hard chaparral) with herb-covered openings and clumps of Jeffrey pine, white fir, lodge- pole pine. The pair were engaged briefly in an aerial chase. This is same area where the species was common in summer of 1948. June 24 Soda Springs, 6750 ft, Nevada Co., Calif - 1 pair seen hopping about on dust-covered boards + among weeds by roadside. The ♂ seemed to be keeping watch as the ♀ foraged; both flew after a few min. To young pines by a nearby barn. - W end Donner Lake, 5940 ft, Nevada Co., Calif - 1 ♂ seen in dense, second-growth lodgepole pines on sandy "flat" near the lake shore. July 4 near Norden R.R. Sta., 6800 ft, Placer Co., Calif - 2 ♂♀ seen together in sparse lodgepole pine forest fronting on open meadow at inlet end of L. Van Norden. July 5 S slope "Signal Hill" [see above] - 5+ seen - Cisco Grove, 5650 ft, on S fork Yuba R., Placer Co., Calif. 1 pair seen on the fine sandy ground under tall black cottonwood trees, where they seemed to be gathering green buds (of sprouting cottonwood shoots?). They flew off into open pine - fir forest on slope S of the river. July 6 near Sugar Bowl Lodge, 7000 ft, 1.2 mi SSW Donner Pass, Placer Co., Calif. - 2 flew over, calling. The sp. is much less abundant here than 2 yrs ago.
