Cagwell 1950 Passerina amoena 2 7300 ft July 19 "Sugar Bowl" 1 1/3 mi. S, 1/2 mi. W Donner Pass, Placer Co., Calif. 2 singing (at dawn) from tops of young firs at upper end of extensive willow thicket area in floor of the "bowl." Snow has only melted from this area in the last 2 weeks. The other 2 birds nearer Sugar Bowl Lodge (see July 4 ff.) are still there. All of these must represent up-mountain movements after breeding, or perhaps by non-breeding males. The persistence of singing seems to indicate certain maintenance of territory, July 20 3 heard this a.m., 2 in same area as above and 1 in similar area on NE side of floor of bowl. July 21 near Sugar Bowl Lodge, 7000 ft., 1.2 mi. SSW Donner Pass, regularly Placer Co., Calif. - Still 2 singing males in willows adjacent forest border -> July 24-25 3 singing ?? here now. July 22 Cisco Grove, 5650 ft., on S. Fork Yuba R., Placer Co., Calif. 1 singing from mixed hard & soft chaparral under sparse conifers (including incense cedars), near same area where found in summer of 1948. July 25 7/100 ft., 3/4 mi. W Donner Pass, Placer Nevada Cos., Calif. 3 ?? singing (2 of them not in full ad. plumage) and 2 ?? seen in same region as on July 8 (g.v. for desert). July 27 2 found here today, 1 imm. ? singing & 10? hearing calling. July 31 near Sugar Bowl Lodge [see above] - no songs now, but single birds giving characteristic "bzeeet'" call not were encountered at 2 places. Aug 2, 3- 7/100 ft., 3/4 mi. W Donner Pass, Placer, Nev. Cos., Calif. - Songs have ceased here also; ?birds still present, giving call notes.
