Cogswell 1950 Passerina amoena June 17 S side Chubb Lake, 5280 ft., Sec. 22, R12E, T17N, Nevada Co, Calif. 1 singing from mixed chaparral (Ceanothus cordulatus, C. velutinus, arctostaphylos patula, Drimys emarginata) and young black oaks & conifers, the latter in small detached clumps. July 4 { near Sugar Bowl Lodge, 7000 ft., 1.3 mi. 5SW Donner Pass, July 11 Placer Co, Calif - 2 singing from tall thickets of July 13 willow in wet meadow and from clumps of July 17 firs nearby. These are new arrivals I am sure, for none were heard here on 3 or 4 visits during the last 2 weeks. Their singing is persistent & localized in area, so perhaps they are defending territory - alls doubt fully nesting at this altitude. The leaves have just nicely gotten out on the willows. July 5 2 fork Squaw Cr., 7000 ft., Sec. 31, R16E, T16N, Placer Co, Calif. 1 heard singing from mixed chaparral, willows, & scattered conifers along Squaw Valley Ski' left. July 8 7100 ft., 3/4 mi. W Donner Pass, Placer Co, Calif - 2 singing from 'mixed chaparral of huckleberry oak, willow, bitter cherry, tobacco-brush, & manganita, with scattered young firs & pines; the firs being used as singing perches over the brush & herb-covered slope. on S facing slope. July 17 near Sugar Bowl Lodge, 7000 ft., 1/2 mi. 5SW Donner Pass, Placer Co, Calif - 1 of the 2 singing birds which have been regular in willow thickets & adjacent pines & firs (July 4) was singing today from tall trees of dense forest where there was practically no understory.
