Cogswell 1950 Rheuctius melanocephalus - 1 June 19 near Sugar Bowl Lodge, 7000 ft., 1.2 mi. SSW Donner Pass, Bluer Co., Calif. - The typical loud "tick" call notes of this species, and a subdued, shortened song were heard in small clump of pines & firs in middle of wet willow thicket-dotted meadow. This is extremely early for any up mountain migrants at this locale, since there are still many snow patches in meadow, & snow is dep in nearly forest. Bird not seen, but! I know of no other call so identical with this. June 23 N side Bear Valley, 4590 ft., Nevada Co., Calif. - 2 heard singing, 1 ? seen, in black oaks and nearby white fir - yellow pine - incense cedar & black oak forest. a probable nesting area. June 27 Balena Cr Camp, 6600 ft., Carson Range, Washoe Co., Nev. 1 ? seen in ceanothus & willows of opening in Jeffrey pines - white fir - black cottonwood forest. I doubt that the species nests here, for several previous summer visits (in 1948) did not disclose it. July 9 S end Lake Tahoe, 6230 ft., Eldorado Co., Calif. - 1 ? seen in lodgepole pines on sandy knoll between lake shore and extensive marshlands (E of Camp SEC. 32, R. 12 E, T. 18 N, Richardsbn) July 10 Truckee River, 5600 ft., Nevada Co., Calif. - 1 ? seen in short, dense willows along wide turbulent stream but not by me. by several persons with me including qualified students The surrounding country is open Jeffrey pine forest covered by and sagebrush, with mountain mahogany on talus slope paralleling river and highway.
