July 17 near Sugar Bowl Lodge, 7000 ft., 1.2 mi. SSW Donner Pass,
Placer Co., Calif. - Nest #1 (see July 3) still holds an
apparently incubating ? . Nest #2 (see July 6, p.3)
could not be found, altho pair was still active in
nearby trees. Nest #3 (see July 11), holds young
being fed by ?.
July 20 [See report by 2 Audubon campers on activities at Nest #3, attached below].
Another observer reported seeing one of the
young fly from the nest to a neighboring tree late this afternoon.
Report of an Observation of the Activities
Near and in a Western Tanager's Nest 7/20/50
Location of nest:
Lodge Pole Pine near grounds firebox
25 to 30 feet from ground
Timed activities (P.P.S.T.)
10:15 A.M. - Male singing on neighboring tree
10:17 - Flying quickly from tree to tree
10:20 - Male sitting on wire near next tree
10:22 - Male nervously flying to next tree
10:24 - Male chirping & looking at observers
10:28 - Female near nest - looking into it
10:30 - Male singing on next tree?
10:32 - Male left tree
10:33 - Back again - Male + female on same tree
10:39 - Male flew off, caught moth - back to neighboring tree
10:38/2 - Male & female flew from tree & crossed their paths in flight.
Female took moth from male in flight.
10:39 - Female feeding young. Male on wire - watching.
10:41 - Female flew to next tree with something in her mouth.
10:41/2 - Chirping of young heard. Much commotion as nest?
10:44 - Male back to next tree - Calling the female. Short excited movements.
10:46 - Male flew away - Returning almost immediately with food.
10:47 - Female returned. Took food from male. Fed young.
10:49/2 - Male + female off
10:50 - Male returned. Fed young. Flew off.
10:51/2 - Female returned. Sitting on next branch.
10:57 - Male singing on next tree.
11:00 - Babies visible. Mouths wide open. Female on edge of nest.
11:02 - Male gave female some food. Female fed young. Male flew off.
11:03 - Female cleaning the nest?
11:04 - Female sitting on next branch. Babies fluttering on edge of nest.
11:05 - Male back to nest. Watching young. All's silent
11:09 - Male off.
11:11 - Male returned with food. Gave it to female. Female fed young.
11:12 - Female flew off - returning at once & standing on edge of nest.
11:13 - Female clipping & hopping nervously, from branch to branch.
11:14 - Much movement in nest?
11:15 - Male + female flew & crossed each other's path. Female shielded young further into nest
11:20 - Male returned & fed young again. Female returned & fed.
11:25 - Female returned & fed young. Male flew off.
11:27 - Babies sleeping - All's quiet. Female watching. - Male chirping
on next tree.
7/22/50 - Tanager's nest was empty. Babies had flown away.
