July 3 (cont.) - loosely as exterior covering of the sides
of the nest, being conspicuous there because ab-
sent as natural growth on the nest tree
- altho abundant on nearby red firs. Song
of I heard in forest nearby.
July 6. Notes of other observers re this nest follow:
Bird Watching . Western Tanager
July 6, 1950 Nest in pine 30' from road
near Sugar Bowl Lodge;
Female sitting on nest in lodgepole pine
about 50 feet from ground. Nest loose
looking affair with outer covering of lichen.
at fork in branch, 6 feet from trunk.
Raised head several times in 1st 1/2 hour.
Male sang from tall trees across road.
Female turned around on nest.
10:55 Male sang again.
Female raised head.
11:03 Male sang farther north.
11:07 Female flew to ground across road.
Not visible.
11:15 Call notes from tall trees across road.
11:17 Male and female fly back to nest.
Male leaves in 15 seconds
Female resumes sitting on nest.
