Euphagus cyanoccephalus - 1
June 17 - Lake Van Norden & vicinity, 6800 ft, Glacer & Nevada Cos. Calif.
off. Numerous (probably several dozen pairs) on large open meadow with open lodgepole pine forest adjacent.
June 17: Bear Valley, 4950 ft, Glacier & Nevada Cos. Calif. Several
seen in broad grassy meadow surrounded by pine, incense cedar, white fir, and black oak forest.
June 20 - Lake Van Norden (see above) - adults carrying food, appar-
ently to young still in nests; but the actual nests
not seen, because of my duties as group leader.
June 23 Bear Valley (see above) - 20+ seen in 1 1/2 hr. visit.
June 25 Sierra Valley, 4900 ft., Sierra Co., Calif. - Common about
farm buildings & on nearby wet grassland
& sagebrush areas. Several NESTS were found on
rafters of buildings of a ranch near center of valley,
no trees being available except a few cottonwoods?
Two nests I was able to reach both held eggs.
June 26 Lake Van Norden - see copy of original field notes
of 3 audubon campers who observed behavior
of colony of adults near young out of nest.
July 6 about 20 flew in to mob a Sparrow Hawk
on the ground after it had a broken wing, apparently
from hitting a telephone wire. They were gathered
closely around the hawk, which was on its back,
all calling vociferously, with one or two at a time
flying up & making short passes & striking it.
(I rescued the hawk).
July 7 Bear Valley (see above) - fledglings out.
July 9 S end Lake Tahoe, 6230 ft. Eldorado Co. Calif. Numerous
in open forest adjacent meadow.
