Cogswell 1950 Xanthocephalus xanthocephalus - 1 June 25 4890 ft. 6 1/2 mi. N Sierraville, Sierra Co, Calif.- A small colony (50+ adults seen) were busily carrying food to nests in dense cat-tails of a 3 or 4 acre reservoir adjacent to extensive wet grassland in central part of Sierra Valley. June 27 Little Washoe Lake, 5020 ft. , Washoe Co., Nev. - about 30 adults seen (both sexes), mostly about the small area of sparse, tall Scirpus sp. in 1 1/2 to 3 ft. of water near shore of S arm of lake. About 10 nests with from 2 to 5 eggs each were found, and 3 dead juvenile birds were found on shore. The nests were made of dry tule stems, woven around about 10-15 growing stems, placed just above the water line. Apparently some disturbance of an early brood has initiated re-nesting. July 9 S. end Lake Tahoe, 6230 ft., Eldorado Co, Calif.- An estimated 200 adults & many fledglings seen in a near extensive marshes E of Camp Dickerson on a 1 hr. walk along it. July 12 Little Washoe Lake (see above) - 10?, 29 seen at NW end of lake; no evidence of nesting here, 1/2 mi. from colony described on June 27. July 26 Colony again visited. Only 6-7 adult females & several fledglings seen. Aug 5 4550 ft., 2 mi. E Reno, Washoe Co. Nev.- 1 flock of 300 est., feeding in large cattle corral, especially from grain bins.
