Sturnella neglecta
June 20 Soda Springs, 6760 ft., Nevada Co., Calif. - 1 very dull plumaged
bird (c-4 or young ?) on small meadow just below Lake
Van Norden dam, to which it flew when disturbed. I
do not think the species nests at this altitude, for the
snow has only melted within the past 2 weeks.
June 23 Inside Bear Valley, 4580 ft., Nevada Co., Calif - 1 heard singing
in middle of large grassy area with few scattered
trees.
July 7 2 flushed from tall grass in same area; they gave
only harsh "chirt" call notes. [= possible nesting pair].
July 9 S end Lake Tahoe, 6230 ft., Eldorado Co., Calif. - 4+ flushed
from grassy borders of extensive marsh in 1 hr. walk.
July 19 E end Lake Van Norden, 6770 ft., Placer Co., Calif - 1 very dull
plumaged bird on open sedge + grass meadow,
it gave no call as it flew.
about 1 1/4 mi. E of June 20 locale.
July 27 Prosser Cr, 5650 ft., 2 mi. E, 1 1/2 mi. S Robert Mills, Nevada Co,
Calif - 4 seen in grassy flat of 50+ acres extent,
surrounded by sparse low sagebrush.
Aug. 5 - Reno + roads just S & E of it, 4500+ ft., Washoe Co., Nev.
(late p.m.) Fairly common in moist grassland (mostly irri-
gated pastureland), more so than the single
birds seen on previous drives thru the area 5 of
town would indicate (July 12, July 26). 1 song heard fully
Aug. 6 - valley near Carson City , Renoa, Ormsby & Douglas Cos., Nev.
(mid-day.) fairly common - 30+ seen while driving thru grass-
land or sagebrush-grassland. No songs heard.
Aug. 17 Little Truckee R., 5800+ ft., Sierra
Sierra Co., Calif - about 5 seen
on 1/2 hr. walk across willow-dotted grassland; subdued song.
