Cogswell 1950 "Journal" 17 Tahoe Valley, 6250- 6500 ft., S of Lake Tahoe, Eldorado Co., Calif. -- traversed (but observations only casual from roadsides) as far as Meyer's on the S., and along main highways around Lake Tahoe; also from Meyer's along dirt road to "Sierra House" SE of the lake (start of the Cold Creek Road, q.v.). VEG. TYPES: semi-arid conifer forest (Pinus jeffreyi, Pinus murrayana, Abies concolor, many interstitial & understory shrubs, but these not in dense array, much Artemisia tridentata included on eastward side); moun- tain meadows & small streams therein; cabins & vicin- ities. VISITS: July 9; Aug. 6; (also the extreme E part on July 23, but with no observations as I recall). U.S. Highway 40, W of Emigrant Gap (q.v.) to lower alti- tudes on W slope of Sierra -- not covered on any of our field trips. A few notes entered for observations made on rapid trips here on June 16; July 19; Aug. 19. U.S. Highway 40 E of Donner Pass (see Donner Pass to Read). Yuba Gap, 5 00 ft., just S of U.S. Route 40 VEG. TYPES: coniferous forest (Abies concolor, Libo- cedrus decurrens, Pinus jeffreyi) with scattered large shrub clumps along borders (Ceanothus cordulatus, Arcto- staphylos patula, Prunus sp.); riparian grove (Populus tremuloides, mixed with the conifers); small artifici- al pond nearly filled with floating & emergent plants. VISITS: June 17; July 7, 21; Aug. 4, 18.
