Wilsona pusilla
June 17 vicinity of Sugar Bowl Lodge, 7000 ft., 1.2 mi. SSW Donner Pass,
Nevada Co., Calif. - Several heard singing in border area
of coniferous forest & willow thickets of meadows
& streambanks. The shrubs are still leafless,
with much snow on all N-facing slopes. This
species, as others more characteristic of broad-leaved
trees, seems to be using the conifers a great deal
while the shrubs are without foliage.
June 19 An estimated 10 heard singing in forest border
and willow & alder thickets in the same area,
on a 2 hour walk thru same.
June 22 7000 ft., 3/4 mi. E Soda Springs, Nevada Co., Calif. - 2 seen (singing)
in mixed hard & soft chaparral on SW-facing slope
near forest edge. The shrubs include buckleberrry
oak & manzanitas, aspen, bitter cherry, etc.
There is much water trickling in small drain-
ages because of melting snow.
June 24 near Sugar Bowl Lodge (see above) - more frequent in
the willows of meadow area, the leaves of which are
now beginning to unfold.
June 24 W. end Donner Lake, 5950 ft., Nevada Co., Calif. - about
5 encountered in 30 min. spent along the inlet
creek
stream, which is bordered by dogwood & willow,
with some tall aspens. 2 birds were seen at close
range as both sang & chased other thru low thickets
on one side of the 10 ft. wide streambed. No actual
fighting was observed, but one hopped close to the
other, facing first R then L with tail fluttering rapidly.
