Dendroica occidentalis
[N.B. - Later records than Aug. 10 were only of birds heard or glimpsed, hence not definitely this species]
June 17: Big Bend Camp &nd., 5800 ft., on S Fork Yuba R., Placer Co., Calif.
1 heard singing from tall, dense conifers (white fir,
Jeffrey & lodgepole pines). The song is drawling
in the first 3 or 4 notes, much like D. nesotensis,
but then runs into a light, see sawing trill without
the drawling quality. [1 & was seen feeding young here in 1948]
June 23 5100 ft., 1/3 mi. S Lake Spaulding, Nevada Co., Calif - 2 heard
singing in tall, dense forest of white fir, incense cedar,
yellow pine, a few sugar pines & Douglas firs. There is
a good understory of dogwood, Ceanothus integer-
rinicus, thimbleberry, etc. along the road; but
the warblers do not seem to use it, staying rather
well up in the tall trees. However,
This sp. has yet to be
located in similarly dense red fir & lodgepole or white
pine forests in the Canadian zone (which lacks understory).
June 30
Big Bend Camp &nd., 5800 ft. (see above) - 2 &'s, which had been
