Cogswell 1950 Dendroica nigrescens June 23 N side Bear Valley, 4685 ft., Nevada Co. Calif. - 1 ♂ seen & heard singing in large black oaks just within yellow pine - mixed cedar forest near large grassy meadow. on S fork Yuba R. June 30 Big Bend Camp Trl, 5770 ft., Glacier Co. Calif. - 1 ♂ seen in dense forest of white fir, Jeffrey & lodgepole pines near an alder bordered stream. It was foraging in the lower & middle part of the canopy of 40-70 ft. firs, giving only the "tiip" call note. I do not think this species nests here, for I have visited the area several times in summer of 1948 & on June 17, 1950, without finding any singing or nesting. July 7 - none found at the Bear Valley locale of June 23. [nor at subsequent visits here on July 21, Aug. 4 Aug. 11 just N Big Bend Camp Trl. [see above] 5850 ft. - 1 ♂ seen in dense shrub area under power lines; mixed hard & soft leaves conifer forest + few, scraggly black oaks nearby. when we approached the bird flew into lower branches of the oaks & finally on toward taller pines. No song given. Aug. 17 Hampshire Rocks, 5900 ft., on S fork Yuba R., Glacier Co. Calif. 1 ♂ seen foraging about upper branches of scattered Jeffrey & lodgepole pines in mixed conifer & cottonwood stringers on rocky flat near stream Aug. 18 near Sugar Bowl Lodge, 7000 ft., 1.2 mi. 55W Donner Pass, Glacier Co. Calif. - 1 ♂ seen with other warblers, in dense red fir - lodgepole & silver pine forest. [the last 4 records all probably, & the last 2 certainly represent up-mtn. post-breeding movement]
