Cogswell 1950 Dendroica aestiva (= petechia) 3 Aug. 18 S.E. end Bear Valley, 4600 ft., Placer Co., Calif. - 1 sing- ing from single huge maple (A. macrophyllum) by rock outcrop which marks edge of broad grassy valley. a few black oaks are scattered along nearly forest edge, and well spaced white alders along the stream, a hundred yards N Aug. 21 Grosser Cr., 5650 ft., 1/3 mi. E, 3 1/2 mi. N Truckee, Nevada Co., Calif.: - 2 adults (? both &) and at least one fledgling seen in brownsed-back, scattered willows along stream in this open, grassy valley. The 2 adults both scolded when we ap- proached the young one, which was deep within a thick bush & un-reachable. Aug. 22 6300 ft., Am. R. Canyon road, 3+ mi. S L. Van Norden, Placer Co., Calif. - 4 heard singing from scattered small black oaks & taller yellow pines on an otherwise dense chaparral-covered slope. Aug. 23 Helena Cr. Camp Ground, 6600 ft., Carson Range, Washoe Co., Nev.: - 1 seen in ceanothus & lower limbs of cottonwoods & conifers a few yards from stream. Aug. 25 6900+ ft., 1/2 mi. 5W Donner Pass, Placer Co., Calif. - 1 seen in willows along trickle of a stream, north conifer forest all around. This is closest to Sugar Bowl & to Donner Pass I have yet found this species. Its absence from the early August general influx of various walkers at the higher altitudes seems noteworthy. They also sang more regularly into August than other species of warblers (to Aug 22 at least see above).
