June 17 N of Big Bend Camp, 5850 ft., near S. Fork Yuba River, Placer Co., Calif.
2 heard singing in dense shrub thickets (partly soft-leaf,
partly sclerophyll) along wide clearing thru conifer
forest by several parallel power lines.
June 21 7100-7200 ft. 3/4 mi. W Donner Pass, Placer Co., Calif. - 3 singing
(1 of them seen) in dense thickets of bitter cherry, tobacco
brush, mountain maple, etc., and at times in the
scattered white firs & Jeffrey pines. This is on ste.
5 facing slope.
June 22 7000 ft. 3/4 mi. E Soda Springs, Nevada Co., Calif. - about 5
singing ♂♂ (2 seen) on this SW- facing shrub &
sparse pine-covered slope. The vegetation is simi-
lar to the last locale, but without the maple & with
more trees & many small aspens. 40 min. spent
in area.
June 24 SW corner Donner Lake, 5950 ft., Nevada Co., Calif. - 1 singing from
rather dense forest of Jeffrey pine, red fir, and lodgepole
pine with good understory of tall shrubs. This is
near bit of willow thicket and a few cottonwoods along
Lakeview Creek.
June 30 (a.m.)
(p.m.) Big Bend Camp, 5800 ft., on S. Fork Yuba R., Placer Co., Calif
1♂ singing in 1 acre of mountain ashers in opening
of forest of tall, dense white firs, Jeffrey pines, etc.
The bird came, with other species, to my whistled call.
July 5 same locale as June 21 - 3 heard singing, 2 (others?) seen.
6500 ft. 5 1/2 mi. W, 1 1/2 mi. N Tahoe City, Placer Co., Calif. - 1 heard
singing from dense shrub thickets (mixed hard & soft
leaves) with sparse, tall conifers - by Squaw Valley ski lift.
July 8 same locale as June 21 - 5± heard singing or seen.
July 11 6600-6300 ft.
2 1/2 mi. W, 3 1/4-3 1/2 mi. S Donner Pass, Placer Co., Calif. - Jaybird + small black
birds.
