"Cowgill meadow"
July 3 near Sugar Bowl Lodge, 7000 ft., 1.2 mi. 55W Donner Pass, Placer Co., Calif.
1 singing(!) from dense willow-thickets in wet meadow.
The bird was also seen at close range. Since we have
not found them in this area during frequent coverage
in the past 2 weeks, I assume this occurrence
represents up-mountain post-breeding dispersal.
July 5 7100-7150 ft., 3/4 mi. W Donner Pass, Placer Co., Calif. - During
3/4 hr. spent along a road in + near thickets of bitter
cherry, tobacco-brush, snowbrush, & aspen 1 full
vigor song of this species was heard + 13-14 young
were seen. The latter foraged both in the shrubs
and in admixed feathered white firs. These birds
again probably have moved up from lower altitudes
since none were found here on visits to same spot in June.
July 8 5 or 6 individuals seen in this same area, most of
them very dull below (= immatures ?)
July 8 - 1 singing still from willow thickets near lodge (see July 3).
July 13 "Cowgill meadow"
- near Sugar Bowl Lodge [see above] - 1 seen in willows.
July 19 E. end L. Van Norden, 6760 ft., Placer Co., Calif. - 1 in willow
thickets (over water) of inlet stream - mouth; it
was involved in a brief chase thru the bush cano
py with a ? V. ruficapilla, first one & then the other
being the pursuer.
July 20 "Cowgill meadow" [see above] - 3 + seen in willows.
July 22 Cisco Grove, 5650 ft., on S. Fork Yuba R., Placer Co., Calif.
1 in undergrowth of dogwood, willow, & aspen along stream
July 23 just SW Star Lake, 9300 ft., Carson Range, Colorado Co., Calif.
1 seen at close range in open (subalpine) forest of mountain
hemlock & white bark pine.
