June 17 (cont'd) - southward projecting branch of a Pinus monticola,
25 ft. from patch of bare ground which is surrounded by
3 to 6 ft. deep snowbanks. The nest is open to
the sky only in a small area to S & E of zenith. It
has a lot of wide, dead leaves of some strap-shaped
variety used in the outer portion, which seems
quite complete. The site is 75+ ft. within the forest
from the edge of the meadow & on the snowy side
of it at that.
June 18 This nest not visited; but the several singing &
foraging birds noted today were all in, some
well within, the red fir-lodgepole pine forest
Perhaps it's because the alders & willows are leafless
or with buds just opening.
