Regulus calendula
2
July 11 6700 - 6500 ft. 3 mi. W, 1 to 3 mi. S Donner Pass, Placer Co., Calif.
(early a.m.) I heard singing (in white fir - Jeffrey pine - lodgepole pine forest)
a several calling in various conifer associations
(upper,
transition into Canadian zones)
July 18 7100 ft. 1/3 mi. S Donner Pass [see p. 1] - 1+ heard singing
July 17}
early to July 25 near Sugar Bowl Lodge, 7000 ft. [see p. 1] - 1 to 4 recorded
on each of 4 visits to dense forest areas,
usually by hearing them sing (from 25th at least).
This sp. is more localized in the continuous
forest stands than R. satrapa, however,
and was not found so commonly as that sp.
singing.
during this period even the satrapa has ceased.
early
August none recorded despite several coverages of
those same areas - probably because singing stopped.
Aug. 14 N base "Disney mtn." 7000 ft., near Sugar Bowl Lodge [see p. 1]
A pair seen feeding 2+ fledglings (1 of them out
of the nest, the other running in & out to
grob food from adult). There were probably
several more in the nest, which was situated
among dense fir foliage on a 50 ft. high branch
of a red fir along border of cleared ski
slope in a dense fir + pine forest. A
mall sang regularly from an area 50-150 yards
within the forest from the NEST tree earlier
this season.
Aug. 18 near Sugar Bowl Lodge, 7000 ft. [see p. 1] - I seen in
forest N of lodge. It called the harsh "jib-it"
note, which seems to be used very little by breeding birds.
