July 20 Sugar Bowl Lodge to "Sugar Bowl", 7000-7300 ft., 1.2 mi. 55w to 1.5 mi. S by W Donner Pass, Placer Co., Calif.
about 10 heard in denser forest areas of red fir,
silver pine, & mountain hemlock. No songs.
July 23 High Meadow, 7800 ft., to ¼ mi. W Star Lake, 9000 ft.
Carson Range, Eldorado Co., Calif. - about 10
heard (5+ seen in one group, including juveniles)
along 2 mi. or so of trail thru fairly sparse
red fir, lodgepole pine, & silver pine forest.
- slope S of Star Lake, 9300 ft. - 1 seen in mountain
hemlocks amid scattering of same in whitebark
pine subalpine woodland.
July 24 near Sugar Bowl Lodge, 7000 ft. [see above] - 1 pair
feeding 7+ insistently begging fledglings
on limbs of firs or knoll by several cabins.
5 of young were in a close row on one
branch, the others in a nearby tree; all
were about 45-50 ft. above ground.
July 25 Flock of 5 seen in forest near lodge.
July 31 1+ heard singing, the first full song heard
for 20 days.
Aug. 3 About 20 encountered, a few in each of
3 aggregations of small birds (warblers, cheeba-
dees, etc.) on a 2/3 mi. walk thru dense forest.
Aug. 10-16 2 to 10 on each of most trips thru denser
forests (red fir + pines).
Aug. 25 7100 ft., ½ mi. S Donner Pass, Placer Co., Calif.
3+ heard in patches of dense forest of
lodgepole & silver pine fronting on a rocky, quarrel-
coved slope.
