June 17 near Sugar Bowl Lodge, 7000 ft., 1.2 mi. SSW Donner Pass, Placer Co. Calif.
June 21 I heard singing in dense red fir - lodgepole pine - white
pine forest.
June 23 5100 ft., 1/3 mi. S Lake Spaulding, Nevada Co., Calif. - a number
(seemingly 10±) heard in loose flock in tall dense
white firs, yellow pines, & incense cedars. apparently
a family group already on the move so this
is a likely nesting area. One heard singing.
N base "Crows Nest Peak", 7100 ft., 1.3 mi. SW Donner Pass, Placer Co,
Calif - 4 heard (2 singing) in dense red fir - white pine
- lodgepole pine on gentle N. facing slope.
Snow is still 1/2 to 5 ft. deep over much of the forest
floor here.
June 29 7100 ft., 1/3 mi. S Donner Pass, Placer Co, Calif - 2 foraging thru
red firs, white pines, lodgepoles, & few hemlocks in broken,
but fairly dense forest on N.E. facing slope (at one brooked
rest area). One of them sang.
(p.m.) - Ice Lakes, 690 ft., 3 mi. W 1 mi. S Donner Pass, Placer Co.
Calif. 2+ heard singing in 2 mile hike around
the lakes in moderately dense red fir - lodgepole
pine forest
July 7 Locality same as June 23 - 1 heard calling (in 10+ min. we
were there)
July 11 6700-6700 ft., 3 mi. W, 1-3 mi. S Donner Pass, Placer Co. Calif
(early a.m.) I heard singing in dense forest with many firs in
it. others heard calling.
July 19 Lodge to "Sugar Bowl", 7000-7300 ft., [see above] - Several
(only)
heard calling in denser forest areas; 2 seen, 1
heard giving a (half-hearted attempt at a) song.
