TYPES: mixed montane chaparral (Prunus emarginata, Ceanothus velutinus, Populus tremuloides,\nAcer glabrum; &, in drier areas, Arctostaphylos patula, A. nevadensis, Ceanothus cordulatus, Quercus vac-\ncififolia, Ceanothus prostratus, etc.); patches of\nconifer forest & scattered trees (Abies concolor, A.\nmagnifica, Pinus murrayana, Pinus jeffreyi, Juniperus\noccidentalis); small forb (many columbines, thistles,\nWyethia, etc.)-covered slopes, just above Highway 40.¹\n VISITS: (via hike a short distance to ½ way up\nthe road leading to airplane beacon on top of 7758 ft.\nhill): June 21; July 5, 8, 25, 27; Aug. 2, 3, 24.\n (This was one of best areas for warblers & finches\nmost of the summer). it forms an interesting contrast\nwith N base of Disney & Crow's Nest peaks straight\nacross Summit Valley from it, but of opposite expos-\nure. Snow here was all all gone by June 16 & appar-\nently had been for some time.\nSignal Peak, W. base of, (= Red Mtn.), 5500 ft., in Secs.\n24 & 13, R 12 E, T 17 N, about 13 mi. W Donner Pass,\nin Nevada Co., Calif. -- an exploring trip in late\np.m. looking for \"Pierce Meadow\", which we learned\nlater was actually there, but on beyond over a still\nbumpier road than the barely traversable one we had\ngone over from 1¼ mi. below Cisco Grove on US 40.\n VEG. TYPES: mixed Transition - Canadian zone forest\ntypes; also extensive chaparral on Signal Peak above,\nwith stringers coming down to road we were on here &\nthere.\n VISIT: July 6\nSnow Lab (see next page)\nSquaw Valley (& NE slope Squaw Peak via ski lift from\nhead of valley), E side Sierra crest NW Lake Tahoe,\nPlacer Co., Calif. -- 6300- ft. at head of Squaw\nValley where lift starts, approx. 7900 ft. at top\n(price $1.50 round trip, with stop-over at top).\n VEG. TYPES: not examined critically, but includes\na lot of montane & subalpine chaparral on slopes below\n& near the lift. Scattered remnants of red fir-\nlodgepole & silver pine forest are being cleared for\nimprovement of skiing. Denser forest still remains\non N-facing slopes to the S of Squaw Valley. Top of\nlift is on steep slope with only a few scattered trees,\nbut hardly a true timberline, since good-sized trees\nexist on higher, but flatter land toward Granite Chief\nto the north.
