Observations
Arrived at nest, of pine needles + dirt in the root end of fallen tree.
Mother, or father, sitting on nest - a gray bird, smaller than robin, with
distinct white ring around eye.
Bird changed position slightly.
Noticeable fluffing or spreading of wings + shoulder feathers.
Leader of group walked up to within 2 1/2 ft. of nest, others
followed. Bird turned head only + looked toward us.
Leader scratched with a twig near nest. Bird fluttered to
ground about 15 ft. away, leaving 1 baby bird, slightly
down-covered, + 3 eggs.
Then flew to a tree, staying within a radius of 150 ft.
Group left area, all but leader, who later reported
adult bird returned to nest, without food for young, at
