July 24 Observation of Townsend Solitaire Nest.
Same NEST as on July 20, Def. by Mrs Wales, Mrs Sorong, J.L.
Location of nest:
In soil root mat of upturned Fir tree.
Nest facing north, made of gray twigs and roots.
Bird facing west on nest with head turned
whether it was male or female on nest. We
assumed it was the female.
Surrounding conditions:
Temperature about 70°. Mosquitoes
Forest moderately clear, mostly
Red Fir. Sunshine about 30% on floor area
near tree.
p.m.
P.D.S.T 3:30 - Observer arrived stationed about 40 ft.
from nest, in plain view.
3:36 - Male (we assume) Solitaire came to twig
on tree near nest, 30 ft. south. Smooth
gray color.
3:38 1/2- Male flew to branch closer to nest,
on Red Fir 20 ft. from nest. Silent. No calls
given.
3:40 - Male flew to open forest beyond about
100 ft. from nest.
3:41 - Female on nest turned head forward so
we could see side of head, ring around eye.
3:46 - Douglas squirrel bat at base of Red Fir 35 ft.
west of nest.
3:51 - Squirrel came to within 6 ft. of nest.
Female bird lifted head attentively.
