Cogswell 1950 Sialia currucoides June 20 NE side L. Van Norden, 6750 - 6800 ft. Placer Co., Calif. - 1 pair at NEST in old woodpecker hole about 6' ft. up in telephone pole by corral in edge of broad meadow NE of lake. 2+ other pairs with NESTS (or at least going in out holes) in buildings below the dam, at Soda Springs. Incubation apparently being carried out by ? at the first nest. One of the others was lined but empty (could reach it with finger) & the other with contents unknown (under high sage). Late June about 4-5 individuals seen on several subsequent dates. I think there are 3 or 4 pair in the small meadow + corral area at Soda Springs. The 2 nests mentioned there are not over 300 ft. apart. June 24 NE slope Quincy Rd., 1.7 mi. SSW Donner Pass, Placer Co., Calif - 7500 ft 1 pair foraging from low twigs & rocks on nearly barren, cleared ski slope. June 25 2+ mi. W Vinton, 4800 ft. Sierra Valley, Buttes Co., Calif - 3 seen along highway in open dry grassy portion and in nearby sagebrush areas of open valley with no trees. If they are nesting birds, fence posts or tel. poles may be their suff. June 28 just E Truckee, . ft. Nevada Co., Calif - 2 along roadside thru open Jeffrey pine & sagebrush flat. June 29 7100 ft. 1/2 mi. S Donner Pass, Placer Co., Calif - 1 ? on wire along road in opening pine - fir forest near Mary L. (a pair here). - Ice Lakes, 3+ mi. W, 1 1/2 mi. S Donner Pass - 1 pair on buildings & trees about lower end of lakes, which are bordered by a 5 acre meadow with willow thickets, moderate to dense red fir - lodgepole pine forest all about.
