June 23. S side Bear Valley, 4600 ft., Placenta, Calif. - 1?, 2+?
seen in open grassy meadow near scattered alder
& cottonwood trees along stream. They utilized
both the trees and 2 telephone poles in open
meadow as forage perches.
July 7. N side Bear Valley 4585 ft. - 1? seen flying near large
humped rock in open meadow, with a clump of
few pines, cedars, & black oaks about it.
July 21 center of Bear Valley, 4570 ft. - 1 pair seen carrying
insects into a fresh looking hole, presumably
woodpecker built, about 10 ft. up in a live
yellow pine which is one of a dozen pines
& oaks (some dead) which ring a large granite
boulder in the middle of this broad, tall grassy
meadow.
