July 20 - N bare Disney path, 7100 ft., 1.3 mt. SSW Donner Pass Glacier
Gulf - After spending the hour from 9 to 10 a.m.
watching a thrush with a bill full of insects, I
located a NEST, 15 ft. from ground and 10 ft. out from
trunk of a 90 ft. high red fir. The site is among dense,
green needles, 3 ft. from the tip of a downward
sweeping branch exposed to the sky to E & SE. The
tree is at edge of forest and cleared ski slope. There is
a small opening with several small logs and much fir twig
litter just within forest to W. Red fir or white pine are
the most common trees.
1037 - Start of observations by Dorothy Herz, Joyce
Burton & myself, all seated in shade on
forest floor 50 ft. away down slope from Nect
1045 - movement (of young?) noted in nest
from trees beyond
1045 1/2 - adult flew down to ground in 50 ft. opening
of forest 30ft from nest.
1048 - hopped up into clump of 10 ft hi fers in opening
called "soft chuk" several times.
1049 - ad. flew up into fir branches 15 ft from Nect.
soon back (not keen by us) across opening
1053 - ad. seen & heard calling frequent soft
"chuk" notes from lower branches of tall
firs on far side of [illegible] opening.
1056 - ad. still in that vicinity, flew down to
ground once; has bell full of insects.
Is about 60 ft. from Nect, slightly upgrd.
1058 1/2 - down to ground again
1059 - I alighted in Nest tree on opposite side from N
