Troglodytes aedon
June 24. W.end Donner L., 5940ft, Nevada Co. Calif - a pair carried
food into an old woodpecker hole in the trunk of a
live aspen tree near the inlet creek. The ♂ sang
only occasionally. Food calls of young were heard
in the nest.
Foraging seemed to be done mostly
in the root tangles & dogwood thickets along the
creek & only occasionally in the adjacent open
forest of lodgepole & Jeffrey pine.
June 25 - S. & S.W. sides of Sierra Valley, 4300ft, Sierra Co. Calif- about 5
heard singing from house & yard areas, in small
towns & about farm buildings.
July 7 near Sugar Bowl Lodge, 7100 ft; 1.2 mi. 55W Donner Pass, Placer Co. Calif.
1 seen in willow thickets near clumps of firs & pines
at edge of forest. The bird gave the grating call char-
acteristic of this species, but no song. I am reasonably
sure it was not present here a week ago, & this
occurrence probably represents up. mountain dispersal.
NE side Mary Lake, 7100 ft; 1/3mi 55W Donner Pass, Placer Co. Calif.
I heard calling (grating note) from bitter cherry & twinberry
thickets under edge of lodgepole pine - red fir forest.
July 11: 6800 ft. 4mi. 5W Donner Pass, Placer Co. Calif - 1 seen in manzanita & ceanothus (candelatus + velutinus) chaparral & in lower
branches of Jeffrey pines on S-facing slope of flattish ridge.
July 17 { near Sugar Bowl Lodge [see above] - 2 seen together in same
19 area as on July 7( or 17th ); 1+ here on July 19 & 20.
II:32 N.of
July 21 Emigrant Gap, 5000 ft., Placer Co. Calif - 1 in Ceanothus
integerrimus brush along road in sugar pine, incense
cedar forest on N-facing slope. Maples & dogwood nearby.
