Date
June - July - S. Fork Yuba River & tributaries, 5200 - 6800ft, Glacer - Nevada
Cos, Calif - old nests at 3 different locations (Loda
Springs, Cisco, 2 mi. W Cisco) show no evidence of use
this year -- and no birds were found along
the streams near them.
July 8 - Truckee River, 5580 ft; Nevada Co., Calif. - 1 adult was feeding
(p.m.)
2 full grown fledglings on small boulders near the
edge of the wide stream here. Foraging was
done by peering under the water from a pre-
carious perch on the sloping rocks, some
food was obtained without putting more than
the head under water, while sometimes the
whole bird went under -- but no ex-
tended underwater periods were noted.
The food call of the young is a very loud
one, carrying 300+ ft. above the sound of the water
to where we were on the highway (vs 45). A
double nest, apparently a new one placed mer-
gent with the old one, is situated about
1/3 mile downstream; it is placed on the downstream
side of a huge boulder, 2 ft. or so above spring
high water mark. A pair nested here in 1948 also.
July 10 - Only 1 bird seen at this locale.; it sat on a small
boulder in mid stream & preened.
July 22 Cisco Grove, 5650 ft., S.Fork Yuba R., Glacer Co. Calif.
1 foraging in slightly riffled, gravel-sandy better
stream, using exposed roots & stick debris both
at edge & in mid stream (at one point) as perches.
