"Lodge" -- see Sugar Bowl Lodge
"Mary Lake" -- see 1/3 mi. S Donner Pass
Martis Valley, 5800-5920 ft., 1 1/2-4 1/2 mi. ESE Truckee,
Nevada Co., Calif. (our "coverages" only from road
which traverses the valley enroute from Lake Tahoe
to Truckee).
VEG. TYPES: Great Basin sagebrush formation (Art-
emisia tridentata, Purshia tridentata, & other shrubs)
grassy swales near stream; arid conifer forest (Pinus,
Jeffreyi, P. murrayana).
VISITS: "enroute" thru valley on July 12, 26;
Aug. 9, 23.
Mt. Judah -- 8243 ft. peak on Sierra crest, 1/3 mi. E,
1 1/3 mi. S Donner Pass (see map).
Not visited, but certain notes on birds seen near
its lower slopes refer to it.
Mt. Rose, 2 mi. S, 1 mi. E of (or 2 1/3 mi. SSE), 8700-
8900 ft., Carson Range, NE of Lake Tahoe, Washoe Co.,
Nevada. -- our observations limited to immediate vi-
cinity of the road from Galena Creek Camp (q.v.) over
the pass near here (8933 ft.) & down to Lake Tahoe;
this high altitude stop of our all day trip was merely
a brief excursion away from the road near an 8730 ft.
Bench Marker just N of the pass.
VEG. TYPES: subalpine conifer forest (Pinus murray-
ana, Pinus albicaulis, Tsuga mertensiana, Pinus monti-
cola) with extremely little in the way of understory;
ground quite gravelly (decomposed granite); one small
riparian thicket (Salix sp.) by a water seep. The
summit of Mt. Rose is visible from here, with succes-
sively higher zones of vegetation, including good
krummholz (Pinus albicaulis) & a timberline.
VISITS: June 27; July 12, 26; Aug. 9, 23.
(I climbed this mountain from near here on July 11,
1948; birds recorded on that trip are listed in my
personal roll book).
(Ne L. Van Norden)
Norden R.R. Sta., near, 6800 ft., approx. on boundary of
Nevada & Placer Cos., 2 mi. W Donner Pass, Calif.
VEG. TYPES: forest & border, riparian thickets
(few) of same type as listed under Lake Van Norden
(q.v.) only the lake & open meadow are not represented here, although a corner of the latter comes up
to the dirt road paralleling the RR on the S at a point
where there is a sheep corral (See Sialia currucoides,
Certhia familiaris).
VISITS: July 6 (twice) -- plus more briefly on
each of the major visits to Lake Van Norden.
