(only) heard in 2+ mile hike thru lodgepole pine - real fir forest around the lakes.
June 30. Big Bend Camp Grd. 5800 ft; on E. fork Yuba R. Placer Co., Calif.
2 came (with other birds) to my vocal call imitation
in area of tall, dense white fir & Jeffrey pines
July 4 near North R.R. Sta. 6500 ft. Placer Co., Calif. - 1 foraging on
July 6 trunks of sparse lodgepole pines near border of
large open meadow.
July 11. A.M. River C. 5 of Ice Lakes (see above) - 2 heard (1 seen) in
Jeffrey pine - sugar pine - white fir forest.
July 17 Sugar Bowl Lodge & other areas near Donner Pass
- July 20 - 1 or 2 found on most of our 2-hour class trips
July 21 Yuba Gap, 5800 ft. Nevada Co., Calif. - 1 heard in fir-
pine forest by small lake.
N. side Bear Valley, 4580 ft. Nevada Co. - 1 in dense
yellow pine - incense cedar - black oak forest.
July 23 near Star Lake, 9300 ft. Carson Range, Eldorado Co.,
Calif. - 1 heard & seen in open subalpine
"woodland" of mountain hemlock, whitebark
pine along Freez Peak trail.
late July Sugar Bowl Lodge & vicinity [see above] - 1 to 3 re-
corded on most 2-hr trips in forest
Aug 3 at least 10 in one flock, in red fir - lodgepole
silver pine forest. also about 5 others at different spots.
some aggregation (+ influx?) of individuals is shown.
Aug. 10 Ice Lakes Camp Grd. 6900 ft [see above] - about
10 heard or seen in 1 1/2 hrs. spent in lodgepole pine - real
fir forest.
