Cogswell 1950 Sitta canadensis June 17 vicinity of Sugar Bowl Lodge, 7000 ft., 1.2 mi. 55W Donner Pass, off. Glacier Co., Calif. - 1 seen in red fir - white pine - lodge pole pine forest on N. facing slope. Heard at other similar points on subseq. days; but seemingly far less common than in 1948. June 23 Bear Valley, 4585 ft., Nevada Co., Calif - 1 calling from dense July 7 stand of young yellow pine, incense cedar, & white fir. N base "Crows Nest Peak", 7100 ft., 1.3 mi. W, 1 mi. S Donner Pass, Glacier Co., Calif. & carried food several times during 20 min. watch into a newly made nest hole about 25 ft. up in a barkless stub some 30 ft. high & 6"+ widess diam. at the level of the nest. This is the same stub as contains the chickadee nest. There is quite a bit of staghorn lichen near the nest & on nearby short branches. June 24 - This & still carrying food, which is apparently obtained in dense red fir - white pine forest which surrounds nest on 3 sides (small opening is upslope). No & seen June 26. This nest watched by 2 of my students, their record, in blue ink, is inclosed. Observations on Nut hatch - nest in top of dead tree (near the top) white-breasted nut hatch 8:42 saw nuthatch at nest (= ?) 9:02 " " " " " " flew away 9:08 1/2 " " " " " " 9:09 " " " " " " 9:16 male in & out of nest 9:29 nuthatch still away from nest. observations by mr. Brown miss and D. Hauck (Audubon campers) on June 26, 1950. 8:24 - 9:30 a.m. P.D.S.T.
