Aug. 14/15/16/18 Sugar Bowl Lodge vicinity, 7000 ft., 1.2 mi. SSW Donner Pass, Placer Co., Calif - 1 or 2 (usually 2) seen or heard on each 2-hr. class trip in nearby forest or forest-edge areas. An influx from other presumably lower altitude, areas is definitely indicated.
Aug. 22 6300 ft., 3+ mi. S L Van Norden, Placer Co., Calif - 1 in lodgepole pines, + small black oaks along edge of extensive chaparral area.
- Orion Cr. Canyon, just below last loc., 6050 ft.
1 seen in cottonwoods (few) along stream.
Aug. 23 Yelena Cr. Camp Ground, 6600 ft., Carson Range, Washoe Co., Nev - 1 seen in close grove of Jeffrey pines, white firs, + black cottonwoods on gravelly + bouldery alluvial fan at mouth of canyon.
Aug. 24/25 Sugar Bowl Lodge vicinity [see above] -> Ice Lakes area, 1 1/2 mi. S Soda Springs - 1 seen on each of 4 two-hour excursions.
General:
Altho during the nesting season, and also to some extent throughout the summer, this sp. seemed to be absent from the denser forests (where S. canadensis was found), the influx of mid-August carried a number of them thus all forest types + even into the same aggregations as S. canadensis.
