June 24 N.side Disney mtn., 7300 ft., 1.3 mi. SSW Donner Pass, Placer Co., Calif.
a pair carrying insects into nest hole about 25 feet up in a large, broken-off trunk of a red fir. The surroundings are a very open (partially cleared) ski slope with considerable rock exposure.
The birds flew to the nest from the scattered trees of the NE face of the mountain (also a ski slope) rather than from the denser fir forest 500 feet below to nest.
July 22 Cisco Grove, 5650 ft., on S. fork Yuba R., Placer Co., Calif. - 1 pair seen foraging on trunks & large limbs of the tall black cottonwoods along stream.
July 31 Sugar Bowl, 7300 ft., 1.4 mi. 5 by W Donner Pass, Placer Co., Calif. - 1 heard calling from sparse red fir - silver pine - lodgepole pine forest edge below a steep, semi-barren rocky slope.
Aug. 1 N.side J. Van Norden, 6800 ft., Nevada Co., Calif. - 1 seen in lodgepole pine - red fir forest.
Aug. 3 7100 ft., 3/4 mi. W Donner Pass Placer Co., Calif. - 1 flew erratically several times detached downward, up, around the trees, & finally alighting suddenly on the trunk of one.
Sugar Bowl Lodge, 7000 ft., 1.2 mi. SSW Donner Pass - 1 seen in red firs. The last 4 records indicate some up.mtns.
Aug.6 Sugarpine Point, 6300 ft., W.side J. Tahoe, Eldorado Co., Calif.
1 flew across road & into trunk of a tall pine at forest edge.
Aug 12 Sugar Bowl Lodge [see above] - 1 seen in forest near 13 lodge, or (on 13th) climbing over 3-story front of lodge itself.
