Cogswell 1950 Parus gambeli June 17 Sugar Bowl Lodge + vicinity, 7000 ft., 1.2 mi. SSW Donner Pass, Placer Co., Calif. - Frequent, but seemingly less common than in 1948, in lodgepole pine - red fir forest about the lodge. An old nest hole by RR xing occupied by a pair (same pr.??) for the 3rd successive year. June 23 Bear Valley, 4985 ft., Nevada Co., Calif. - 2 in yellow grey pine - incense cedar - white fir forest (1/2 hr stop). July 7 June 23 N base 'Crows Nest Peak', 1.3 mi W, 1 mi S Donner Pass. - A NEST found in natural crevice at the top of a 5 ft. long barbless scar in the S side (upslope) of a 30 ft. high stub closely surrounded by live trees. The entrance is about 10 ft. above ground, and there is a Red-breasted nuthatch's nest near the top of the stub. June 24 W. end Donner L., 5940'ft., Nevada Co., Calif. - 3 seen in dodgepole pine forest during 1 hr. 20 min. walk. ; 1 of them entered a hole in the side of a 2-story abandoned building — about 20 ft. from a, 1948 nest site. June 27 Malena Creek Camp, 6600 ft., Carson Range, Washoe Co., Nev. - 2 seen during 1 hr. (in early p.m.) spent in Jeffrey pine - white fir forest with black cottonwoods along the stream. -8730 ft.; 1.2 mi. SSE mt. Rose, Washoe Co., Nev. - 2 heard (1 seen) in whitebark pine - white pine - lodgepole pine - mountain hemlock forest of typical open nature for this altitude. July 3 Sugar Bowl Lodge vicinity, 7000 ft. (see above) - 2+ heard singing in conifer forest. July 4. 6800 ft. near Norden RR Sta., Placer Co., Calif. - A nest hole 8ft. up in a large dead stump by 2 lodgepole pines near edge of open meadow & road. Pair carrying food often.
