July 23 - High Meadow - Jneel Peak trail, 7800 - 9000 ft. Carson Range, Eldorado Co., Calif. - 4 encountered in about 3/4 mi. air-line distance in the 1 hr. 20 min. of hiking up through the red fir - lodgepole pine - silver pine forest belt.
from above point, W of Star Lake, past the lake and southward up steep slope to W slope Job's Sister Peak, 9000 - 10,200 ft. - 14 counted in 1 hr. 30 min. (and another 3/4 mi. air-line distance) of hiking through the whitebark pine - mountain hemlock zone (up to lower edge of a rather broad brumnholy zone). Several were very tame.
above tree-line on Jneel Peak & Job's Sister, 10,200 - 10,900 ft. - 8 seen in the brummholz whitebark pines of the cirque between the peaks or flying over the barren slopes above. The peaks are 1/2 mi. apart.
July 26 8730 ft., 1/2 mi. N Mt. Rose - Slide min. saddle, Carson Range, Washoe Co., Nev. - 20 (est) seen or heard in the open subalpine woodland of lodgepole pine, whitebark pine, silver pine, & mountain hemlock during 30 min. we spent there. (cf. June 27, July 12). Several were very tame, allowing approach to within 20 feet as they clambered over needle clusters of the hemlocks • pecked at bases of needles (to get a green beetle #, which is common here now).
