Cogswell 1950. Nucifraga columbiana June 21 - NW face Mt. Lincoln, 8300 ft., Placer Co., Calif - 1 calling from hemlocks over the still deep snow banks above the Sugar Bowl Cliffs. June 24 - 7500 ft., 1.4 mi. SSW Donner Pass, Placer Co., Calif - 1 slighted (6:20 a.m.) in w. white pine on NE slope of Disney Peak; it called "k-r-r-a-ch" a few times then flew on to the W towards L. Van Norden. This is about 1 mi. from last locality. June 27 - 8730 ft., 1/2 mi. N Mt. Rose - Slide Mtn. saddle, Carson Range, Washoe Co., Nev. - about 5 seen during 1/2 hr. stay in small area of whitebark pine, mt'n. hemlock, W. white pine, & lodgepole pine - at, therefore, extreme lower edge of Hudsonian zone. Distinct nasal "w-r-aaah" calls heard here today may have come from young birds; but none were seen for sure. June 30 - 5900 ft., Big Bend, S Fork Yuba R., Placer Co., Calif - 1 heard calling from scattered Jeffrey pine - Incense cedar - white fir forest on S. facing slope near extensive chaparral areas of Rattlesnake Mtns. This is an early date for such a low altitude. July 8 - 7300 ft., 1 mi. W Donner Pass, Nevada Co., Calif - 1 calling from Jeffrey pines above shrub-covered slope. July 12 - 8730 ft., 1/2 mi. N Mt. Rose - Slide Mtn. saddle, Washoe Co., Nev - 5 or 6 heard, 2 seen in same area as on June 27. A dead one, in worn (juvinal?) plumage, was found, with body swarming with fly larvae. July 20 Disney Peak [see above] - 2+ in same area as on June 24.
